Lasting footprints

Connector extraordinaire CK led me over to Paul’s post Next Time, Whisper Better:

“We’re in an industry where everyone is trying to scream the loudest, when all we ever needed to do was get close enough to whisper. “

I do so love a quiet word. I can’t what people are saying when they’re yelling at me. I just want to protect myself from that energy.

A shining example of people who are whispering in the right ear at the right time and using the intimacy they have with their clients is World Nomads, an online travel insurance provider, who are using e-commerce technology to take the hard work out of ‘making a difference’.

Footprints is their online fundraising mechanism designed to leave positive footprints all over the internet.

When you purchase a travel insurance policy you can add a small contribution to the policy purchase price. It’s that simple. 

Don’t you just love the concept of positive footprints? A whisper of ‘wouldn’t you like to give back’?

In the shifting sands of the internet this is step in the right direction.

Hi Paul- thanks for visiting!
I guess what I’m really banging on about is:
We need to focus on what people ARE doing to make a difference.
and
“I need to notice what I can do to make a difference. And DO it.”
Seeing is easy- it’s the discipline and self belief that you CAN do this in all your interactions that’s a bit harder.

It’s been a fascinasting exercise to run – and one that’s yeilded amazing results both for the charities we support ($115K raised since Jan 05) and our brand identity.

Let me tell you a few things about the ‘Doing it’ bit … Cheekily, we’ve set the donation amount to $2 or 2 pounds etc and then let the user opt-out of it entirely or even up the amount to a max of $10. The basis of our brash decision on behalf of the user is that people *would* like to help/do something, but often don’t know what that is. Also, we’ve set the micro-donation to be about the price of a coffee – the kind of daily purchase you make without thinking.

So, what does all this mean? Well currently, 87% of our customers globally choose to donate, we’ve had 43,000 individual donations without a single complaint and we’ve even received postive survey feedback and been blogged for pushing an agenda. Our customers feel like they understand our brand and where we stand on such issues.

Also – unsurprisingly – we gain PR about the initiative and doors open into the corporate world much more easily than any kind of spiel on travel insurance (talking insurance is like chewing dry weetbix.)

But all that stuff, just stems from WorldNomads director, Simon Monk’s original idea to *DO something*. It’s as simple as that.
